Hotel Wi-Fi
and a VPN
Hotel networks are shared with other guests and with the hotel's own systems. A VPN keeps your traffic encrypted between your phone and the VPN server, whichever network you use.
Why hotel Wi-Fi needs a VPN
Other guests share the same network. Traffic that a site does not encrypt is visible to whoever can capture it on that network, and a VPN removes that exposure for everything your phone sends.
Set it up once
- Install the RedVPN app on your phone, or the desktop client on your laptop.
- Start the free 3-day trial. No account and no card are needed to try it.
- Turn the VPN on before you connect to the hotel network.
Hotel networks and sign-in pages
Captive portals, the page that asks you to accept terms or sign in to a hotel network, can be harder to use with a VPN on. If a page does not load, switch the VPN off for that step, do the sign-in, then switch the VPN on again.
What Protect Mode adds
Protect Mode runs alongside the VPN on your phone. It refuses known malware, phishing and command-and-control hosts from its threat list, and flags traffic that looks unusual. It sends your device id and the addresses it checks to RedVPN for that check; the addresses are not kept. Read the Protect Mode page.
