Airport Wi-Fi safety

Airport Wi-Fi is convenient and shared. Anyone on the same network can try to observe or interfere with traffic that is not protected. These are the steps that matter.

Is public Wi-Fi safe?

Search interest for "airport wifi" in the United States rose from an average index of 23 in 2021 to 64 in 2026 to October (Google Trends, yearly average of the weekly index; read 2026-10-25). Source: RedVPN market study, section 13.

Public Wi-Fi is not private by default. Traffic on an open network can be observed by others on it, and fake networks with familiar names are a known tactic. Protection depends on what you do on the network:

Before you connect

  1. Join the network the staff or the airport's own signage names, not one with a similar name you see on a list.
  2. Turn on your VPN before you open any app.
  3. Turn off automatic joining of open networks in your phone's Wi-Fi settings.

How RedVPN helps at the airport

RedVPN encrypts your phone's traffic on the network you joined. Protect Mode checks the addresses your phone connects to against a threat list and refuses known malware, phishing and command-and-control hosts on the device. Protect Mode sends your device id and the addresses it checks to RedVPN for that check; the addresses are not kept, and the full report is made only when you ask. Read how Protect Mode works.

Mobile data as the alternative

If you have a travel eSIM installed, you can use mobile data at the airport instead of Wi-Fi. Travel eSIM plans are installed before you fly.
